Set in the Irish sea, the Isle of Man is some two hundred square miles of unspoilt countryside, mountains and beaches. Staying in the Victorian resort of Douglas with its delightful promenade and specialist shops, here is a remarkable holiday that will take you all over the island.
After our local pick-ups we travel to Heysham for our ferry to Douglas. After our ferry crossing we travel on to our hotel in time for dinner.
We discover the south coast today beginning with a trip aboard the Isle of Man Steam Railway, a perfectly maintained, original Victorian train system and the longest narrow gauge steam line in Britain. We board the train at Douglas and travel through the countryside to the resort of Port Erin where we can enjoy a visit to the local railway museum. From here it's a short journey to Cregneash Folk Park, a peaceful restored 19th century crafting village where traditional costume guides show us around their delightful cottages.
Today we have a free day to explore the capital. You could take a nostalgic journey along the Douglas Promenade on the world's oldest horse drawn tramway. Alternatively, visit the Manx Museum and National Art Gallery (local charges may apply).
Today we travel to the Manx Electric Railway depot where we take the electric railway northwards towards Laxey, home to the world's largest working waterwheel. The Great Laxey Wheel (also known as Lady Isabella) really is a remarkable example of Victorian engineering and has drawn tourists to the Isle of Man to admire its 72 foot statue for the past 150 years. It is majestically positioned in the heart of the Glen Moor Valley. After lunch we enjoy a guided tour of the beautiful 16th century Milntown House, with time to explore the gardens, visit the Miltown corn mill and the stunning vintage car collections (display dates vary and are seasonal). We enjoy a delicious homemade cream tea in the Milntown Conservatory Restaurant which has beautiful views of the walled garden.
After breakfast we leave our hotel and begin our journey home.
